Readmissions in Health Reform
Health Reform remains a top priority for President Obama. On February 22, 2010, President Obama announced a proposal including ideas from the Affordable Health Care for America Act Bill passed in the U.S. House of Representatives on November 7, 2009 and the U.S. Senate Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act passed on December 24, 2009.
Readmissions remain a focus of President Obama’s plan for cost containment of the Medicare program. His plan proposes to “reduce Medicare payments that would otherwise be made to hospitals by specified percentages to account for excess (preventable) hospital readmission. (Effective October 1, 2012).”
