Q:

Will there be any changes to the way we sequence the principal diagnosis for a patient admitted with a history of COPD and Pneumonia on 10/01/17?

A:

Yes, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) proposed in the March 7-8, 2017 ICD-10-CM Coordination and Maintenance Committee meeting minutes to delete the instructional note, “Use additional code to identify the infection” under code J44.0, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease with Acute Lower Respiratory Infection. The proposal has been finalized for FY2018, which means that we will revert back to sequencing the condition that was chiefly responsible for occasioning the admission as the principal diagnosis, when it comes to a patient being admitted with a history of COPD with Pneumonia.
